The Crew | Sullivan, Ramsey join Romney
Aaron Sheinin of The State is reporting that Terry Sullivan will serve as Mitt Romney’s South Carolina director and George Ramsey will serve as political director:
Sullivan to head Romney’s S.C. campaign
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is expected to announce tomorrow that veteran S.C. political operative Terry Sullivan will run Romney’s Palmetto State campaign for the 2008 Republican nomination.
Sullivan, 32, managed Jim DeMint’s successful bid for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate in 2004 and DeMint’s general election victory over Democrat Inez Tenenbaum. In 2006, Sullivan oversaw Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson’s successful re-election.
Joining Sullivan on Romney’s staff will be George Ramsey as political director, a position he held on DeMint’s 2004 team.
Sullivan is partners with Warren Tompkins, one of the state’s top political consultants, in a consulting firm based in Columbia. Tompkins is one of Romney’s national campaign advisers.
“We are going to run a real grassroots campaign,” Sullivan told The State. “This isn’t a race where we’re going to win the endorsement battles or have the most endorsements. It’s certainly not a race where we start out as a front runner. We’re a huge underdog.”
U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has landed the endorsement of most of the state’s top elected Republicans, while DeMint is thus far the lone high-profile Romney supporter. Sullivan said more Romney endorsements are coming, but the former Massachusetts governor is clearly not banking on big-name backers to win the party’s S.C. primary.
